What We've Been Doing

I'm behind and have a big post to do on our New Year's in Utah.  And I'm going to.  But meanwhile here is sort of a summary of our lives this last month.
First, Rob's work had a big schmooze fest cocktail party where they kiss up to all the doctors in town, and we had to go and mingle and be social with a bunch of doctors.  It was painful.  It's times like this when I would kill for a glass of wine to dull the pain.  Seriously. The following weekend we had to go to an even more painful doctor's party.  The Washoe County Medical Society, which is basically a lobbyist organization and it hurt.  It hurt my very soul.  It was so painfully dull. I thought my attendance was required, but the other wives found excuses not to go, and I will be wise next year and have a cold or something.
As for Rob.  He has been working, working, working, working, working, and then working.  In his spare time he works.  The practice has way more work than they have doctors.  This is a mixed bag.  It is great that the practice is thriving.  It stinks that this feels more like we are back in the early days of residency.  Somethings gotta give, because if it is always going to be like this....  I guess the nice thing about private practice is they evolve and change. Here's hoping there is rapid evolution and change.
What else?  I chopped off my hair.  The girl did and AWFUL job. It took her over 2 hours.  And I think by the end both of us were nearly in tears.  My thick hair was out of her league.  She offered to do it for free, but I felt bad and paid and told her I loved it.  I called a friend when I got home (who happens to be bff's with a cousin, what a small mormon world) and got a recommendation and went and had someone fix it for me.  She did an amazing job and I now love my hair.  I love having short hair after my hair being fundamentalist style for awhile.
As for Reno, it's a terrific place.  We are a 5 minute walk from a trail that keeps on going right up a canyon.  We didn't have snow until last weekend and we've been able to do some hiking in forests that have streams, aspens, birches and pines.  Heaven.  Now the mountains are covered in snow and the kids will start skiing on Saturdays and I can get out my snow shoes and dust them off.  I may even take ski lessons.  No, I am going to take ski lessons.  Who can live next to Tahoe and not ski?  (Who can live in SLC and not ski....I learned my lesson)  I've met some really great people here, and am involved in playgroups, book club, recipe group, etc.
Rob, Lucy, and I had to speak in church on Sunday.  That is always an ordeal, but it went well, and now it is behind us.  Our ward is big enough that maybe we won't ever have to speak again.  I can dream, right?
The kids are settling in for the most part.  They boys have made some friends and there are a billion boys in the ward and plenty of them are nice kids.  Clara loves preschool and her playgroup and is doing just fine. Although the other day she burst into tears as we were driving, "I miss Eden so much."  (Eden was her partner in crime.  The two of them were trouble). Lucy is having a really hard time.  12 year old girls at school and at church are not very open hearted.  She's struggling and I'm getting a taste of how painful it might be to watch a child suffer socially.  It hurts and breaks my heart.  I just pray that she can find SOMEONE to appreciate her and befriend her.  There isn't a nicer girl.  Rob's overworking and Lucy's struggles make me second guess our move.  I know it takes time.  I know, I know, I know.  But that doesn't make it easy right now.
"I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it." (and if you don't think I'm being completely sarcastic in using that quote, you don't know me).

Galena Creek

The day after Christmas we took a walk through the lovely Galena Creek area.  It was so much fun.  The boys brought their swords and darted in and out of the trees, hiding, charging, sword fighting, etc.  It was beautiful and we discovered multiple hiking opportunities.  Heaven.  Loving this place more and more.

A Very Merry Christmas!

We spent most of Christmas Eve in the car driving back from SoCal.  We had a delicious (sorta) dinner at a restaurant near Mount Whitney and arrived late at home where we proceeded with our usual traditions.  Jammies, the scripture account of Jesus' birth, and then the preparations for Santa.

The kids didn't wake up very early, but once Clara woke up at her usual 7:00 hour the party got started in our room.

Lucy's gift inspired shock and awe in her:

It was kind of nice to take a break and go to church.  Christmas always feels like Sunday anyway, so it was nice to go and worship.  And our ward choir was really awesome and it was very uplifting and Christmasy:
The second we got home the kids changed back into their jammies and enjoyed their loot.  Christmas at our house always looks as if a bomb has gone off:

I made a turkey.  It was really pathetic, but looked especially pathetic when it fell out of the baking bag and into the pot:
Dinner was festive, if not entirely as delicious as I had hoped for, and we all had a very merry Christmas:
