Spring Break: Canyonlands, Island In the Sky

Tuesday morning we headed up to Canyonlands.  It was cold and windy.  First stop was Mesa Arch which is stunning and scary.  Cliffs and wind....

We went to the end of the mesa and were going to do a little hike but the gale force winds prevented us:
But we did get to discover Franklin's cirque de soleil flexibility:

We decided to hike to the Mesa ruins.  This is kind of a steep hike.  I know slick rock is really grippy, but somehow hiking up a sheer rock face is kind of scary for some of us:

We were slightly disappointed by this which we assumed wasn't a ruin but a recreation:

But then we found the real ruins.  Very cool:

Danny and Dave work for the same company and had some huge huge big wig conference call with the SEC at 2 and they and their families had to drive back to the visitor center so they could have reception for the call.  So we were on our own until dinner.  So next we headed to upheavel dome.  The views were beyond majestic.  Camera's can't capture it:

We found the beginnings of an arch:

Next up was whale rock, windy, but spectacular.  The kids posed for a school picture shot:

Lucy played with the panorama feature and Clara and I danced to On Top of the World:
We stopped at an overlook and saw one of the original roads down the cliff walls.  Used by Indians, ranchers, miners, and now recreators:

Last stop of the day was Dead Horse Point.  The wind had died down and the temperature was pleasant.  And the views were breathtaking:

We met up with everyone at a hole in the wall burger place in Moab.  Tot's and fry sauce and a raspberry shake.  I love Utah:
