Ireland Day 6: Kinvarra, The Burren, and the Cliffs of Moher

Our Airbnb was in the village of Kinvarra, a picturesque little place which was close to the Burren, and Galway (sort of ish).  We started the day with a nice breakfast at a little cafe and then walked through the village.  Then we went to the village castle, Dunguire Castle.

Next we drove to the Burren which is a national park and a strange rocky formation.  Our first stop was Corcomroe Abbey.

We stopped next at Poulnabrone Dolmen, an ancient tomb (they think) on the Burren.  Pretty cool and the landscape is so strange and pretty.  The Burren is surprisingly home to a huge variety of plant species from orchids to grasses.  Kinda cool.

Our next stop was Catherconnell Fort, built in the late Iron Age.  Whilst there we also had lunch in the tea shop and then saw a sheep dog demonstration that while incredibly touristy, was super incredibly cool and fun.

On our way out of the Burren we drove by this lovely old ruin.

After the Fort we drove to the Cliffs of Moher (the cliffs of insanity from Princess Bride).  Oh wow.  A highlight of the trip for sure.  If you just go to the lookouts near the visitor center you have to contend with mobs of tourists.  There were many Chinese tourii who like to pose which is puzzling and entertaining.  Anyway, we walked past the tourist crowds for a couple of miles out to an old tower.  It was indescribably beautiful.  And once again, the weather could not have been more amazing.  The Burren was overcast and slightly stormy, but the Cliffs were perfect.  And we were there for sunset.  Amazing.

Yes this scared the crud out of me to pose for this shot.

After the cliffs we drove up the road to Doolin a bitsy village by the Atlantic, known for it's music and we found a pub and ate delicious food and enjoyed a trad session.  We had a longish drive back to Kinvarra that night, and sadly there was a fender bender.  Happily we'd been forced to pay the $400 insurance and so it ended up we got our moneys worth and the fender bender was pas de problem, once we got the bumper bent back.

What a great day!!!
