Some Answers

In light of my weight loss frustration I have been doing some reading.  My favorite website is the Dr. Oz (of Oprah fame) website, Real Age.  You can take a test and it tells you your real age (mine was 27, yay!) and has a lot of great advice on nutrition, exercise, stress management, and good living.  Check it out.  Anyway a few things I've learned, which may or may not be common knowledge to some of you:
1.  My thyroid last time it was checked was deemed normal and my synthroid (meds)  dose remained the same. (I wonder if there is high end/low end normal so want to get another opinion).
2.  When you are doing a lot of aerobic exercise it isn't always wise to cut down on calories because if you don't have enough calories your body will burn muscle.
3.  Muscle is what burns calories and helps you lose fat.
4.  You need a balanced blend of flexibility, strength, and aerobic exercise.
5.  Strength training is the most essential component to weight loss because without increasing muscle mass you won't be able to boost your metabolism.
6.  Strength training is vital for women in order to fight osteoporosis. (Which I am very much at risk for because I am white, pale, not a big milk drinker, and small boned).
7.  Cardiovascular or aerobic exercise opens up the caliculi in your bones allowing better circulation and thus stronger bones.
8.  One of the keys of a good workout program is variety in  your aerobic workout.  If you run 6 miles everyday your body will plateau unless you have more variety.  Change the intensity and change the activity regularly.
So hopefully I can get on track and build up my non-existent strength.  The website has a great 20 minute workout for strength training if like me, you can't/don't want to make it to the gym.  That workout combined with a 30 minute daily walk is supposed to be a powerful tool to fight aging and poor health.

I will be going to that web site, though I'm a little afraid to know my "true" age! I remember a time when I could just eat less and I would dwindle to nothing. As we age our bodies change how they work and we have to learn to adjust and work for them. I just got a gym membership because I keep hearing how women in particular need strength training around 40, I hate it!

good information Anna! thanks. I have been working on the baby weight and have just been running - and feeling as big as ever. Learning that I should be strength training as well really helped! :)

Don't you love what having kids and age does to our bodies? I keep thinking this baby is going to be like Tucker...HUGE. I am 24 weeks and my belly is HUGE. I have not gained a single pound yet but this baby is growing like crazy! Wish me luck!
