I loved and adored these books. I mean, I really loved and adored these books (perhaps that is why These Is My Words was a huge personal hit). I easily read the series twenty times before I was 12. Anyway....Lucy is currently digging these books and it makes me so excited. She loves them. Her grandma bought her a pioneer bonnet last summer, which has been worn on walks around the block and other outings recently. The kids go in the backyard and play pioneers. The playhouse is a log cabin, bikes are horses, etc. (the boys play enthusiastically because we have been reading Indian in the Cupboard and they enjoy the whole cowboy/indian thing. They really want to scalp the pioneers, but Lucy is the boss and that isn't allowed. Instead they have to "thrash" the corn and plant crops).
Well anyway, last week we went up to Old Deseret Heritage Park with my sister Maren and her kids, plus Emily's kids. It is a very fun place if you haven't been. The kids got to ride ponies, pull handcarts, make arrowhead necklaces (or arrows if you were Anders), do pioneer chores, go to a pioneer school, and much more. Anyway, we had a nice day, and the pioneer fan amongst us loved it.

want to know something cute? tom loves the laura ingalls books too--it's what his mom read to him when he was little. i think it's so cute because you would never think he'd be the type.
sounds like a fun outing!
This looks wonderful! I think we'll try it.
so fun! I love that the boys want to scalp the pioneers...that's awesome.
It must be their Indian blood! Always enjoy the Heritage Park -- especially with the keikis.
Isn't that a fun place to go? We went there a few weeks ago and had a great time-even though we didn't get to sample the churned butter on fresh baked bread. Did you?
You are always doing such wonderfully creative and interesting things with your kids. I'm starting to feel like a slacker!
And, I certainly feel like a slacker when it comes to the Little House books. I never got into them as much as you did when I was a kid. Then, when I started to read them to my kids last year, I was so exhausted by the loooong (and many) descriptions of how they prepared food for the winter that I had to give up. What a lazy girl I am. Do I get to be in your handcart company if we have to walk to MO?
I think it's so cool that it's so celebrated in Utah. Us CA mo's always forget about it. It's just been lately that I've truly realized how hard and how amazing it is that our ancestors cross the country with HAND CARTS! The church is TRUE!
I loved these is my words and little house on the prarie too! No wonder we have so much fun together!
ps. cool photos, it looked like the kids learned a lot.
Good times and good parenting Anskers. I miss July 24th.
