Rites of Passage

Last night the activity day's girls from our ward had a talent show. First, allow me say I love my calling. I am in the primary presidency and I love working with the kids in our ward. A friend started a blog called Hopefully Mormon , (which seems to me to be a Mormon version of Post Secret) where someone posted this:
I think that this kind of nails what it is like to be in primary. One thing that I've noticed is that teaching in primary clarifies how simple and beautiful the gospel is. We cover the basics in primary and that is all that matters. It is all that needs to be covered. I love it.
Anyway, back to my story. Last night was the activity day girls talent show. It was very cute. Several girls performed Taylor Swift songs. It made me grin, because I just think it is so dang cute the way these girls have latched onto Taylor Swift. Lucy loves her. "Mom, Taylor Swift rocks," is something Lucy has told me on many occasions. Whenever Taylor Swift comes on the radio, a voice in the back seat starts belting out, "It's a love story, baby just say yes..." or "She wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts..." And that belting voice makes me smile inside and out. I think every generation has their Taylor Swift.
It's a rite of passage, isn't it? For me, it was definitely Tiffany. When I was in junior high every girl LOVED Tiffany. Our Dixon middle school cheerleaders did a dance to I Think We're Alone Now, with the pinnacle of the dance being performed as Tiffany sang "You put your arms around me and we tumble to the ground and then you say, I think we're alone now..." You better believe that there were many non-cheerleader girls replicating the dance all over Provo in the safety of their bedrooms. I was, for sure. I can still do part of it for you, if you want.
I don't know why it amused me so much to see the passion for Taylor Swift last night, but I guess it is just because it is a reminder that these girls are people, who are growing up, and discovering their place in the world. They are all such wonderful people, and I just hope they continue to be as happy and good and sweet as they are now.

I love it. I remember dancing to Tiffany in my pointe shoes on our back porch. Good times.
And I love Lucy and her love of Taylor Swift. Good stuff.

Tiffany. Classic. My bestfriend and I made up our own dance to that same song! We should have a dance off :) Also have a Taylor Swift lover. It's crazy to realize they're at the ages when they'll have all these memories forever.

I missed Tiffany and believe that I am currently missing Taylor Swift, but your ruminations are very much appreciated.

I liked teaching Primary a lot. I am afraid I will never be in the Primary presidency, however.

Sweet post. Don't really relate to the singers, however. Not familiar with either one. Is it a girl thing? Or am I just gettin' old?

I can't agree with equating Taylor Swift with Tiffany. Taylor has a lot more going for her as a songwriter and performer. I think Taylor will last a lot longer than Tiffany did, even if the enthusiasm for her of young girls doesn't.

But then again, I think Taylor Swift rocks too! (imagine that in my impersonation of a young girl's voice, but being serious)

I agree with your assesment, Will. I guess it is the adoration I am comparing.

I got to see Tiffany perform when she came to BYU, I think in the spring of 2000 or 2001. It was kind of surreal to see her perform when you are 22 instead of 12, but fun all the same.

I follow you now. I'm with you on the adoration aspect. While you were imitating cheerleaders in your privy chamber, I was, as you know, practicing my Liverpudlian accent to make all of the lines I'd memorized from Hard Day's Night that much more authentic when repeated.

While the pubescent nature of my obsession did subside, the Beatles are still one of the Olympians in my music pantheon. I don't know if Taylor Swift will ever reach Beatle-like influence or ability, but we'll see. The first few Beatles albums, while promising, certainly weren't Revolver or Sgt. Peppers.

Awww cute post, Anna! I love what you write.
p.s. I love Taylor Swift, but she's no Tiffany.

Fun post. Amen to Tiffany. I lip-synched and danced to one of her songs in a 5th-grade talent show and won $5. Pretty big time.

I didn't know Taylor is the current young girls' obsession, but I'm not surprised. Better her than Britney, eh?

I don't want to admit my favorite singer, it would show my age to much:) Fun post. I am glad I wasn't the only one dancing in my room by myself.

I'm trying to think who it was for me... I would be heart sick to think that the only person I can think of right now is Beyonce with Independent Woman or Britney Spears Hit Me Baby One More Time... I'll come up with a better one I swear!
