Recently, for RS enrichment night we had what was called RSUniversity and there were "mini-classes" on organization, family traditions, and nutrition. Each was extremely over the top and Pinterest worthy and made me giggle inside with the level of ridiculousness. Not really my cup of tea. One lady who taught made the suggestion of creating a family motto and then basing all your family activities on that quote. Awesome, right? Pin that mormon housewives! So our family has decided to adopt the motto, "Nerds will dominate the world." Or, "nerds rule". Okay we haven't narrowed it down, but we definitely want to go with the nerd theme for sure. It really feels right.
To that end: we recently discovered that TED talks are available on Netflix. And we introduced them to our kids. And we have been watching them like crazy lately. And we love them. So so so much food for thought. And so much inspiration to come up with an idea worth sharing. Here are a couple of our favorites so far:

So, I (reluctantly) went to "Time Out for Women" this past weekend with a group of girls from church. Some of it was good... most of it was painful. Shari Dew spoke about the role of women in the church, and why the media likes to make a big deal about it, but how really it's not an issue. She used the old tried explanation: "of course we know who's REALLY running the church, wink wink, nudge nudge, ha ha." Insert knowing laughter here. Blech.
Afterward, we went and got some ice cream and I expressed some of my feelings about the fact that there is a reason the media makes women and the church an issue and that I think it's something to be thoughtfully discussed and just not brushed aside with laughter. I was met with mostly blank stares. Sigh.
I should've gone to a TED conference instead. Much more thoughtful and uplifting.
I read this earlier when you had the "I can do hard things" examples, but a kid pulled me away before I could comment. Bahaha! I was cracking up. You hit the nail on the head. :) I also appreciate all your pinterest comments.
On another note, TED talks are great! They are so interesting. I watched one earlier in the year about cancer research. Holy cow, it was blowing my mind!
I think you guys are raising great kids.
Oh, Ellen how I can relate. Wink, wink, ha, ha, just doesn't cut it. Especially not when I am raising 2 girls myself. It is getting hard, let me tell you.
And Brianna, I had to edit because I was way too bitter sounding :)
I think nerds have the greatest potential for happy and successful lives. I love your nerds!
D.
Nerds will indeed rule the world one day. I support. I've heard lots about these TED talks but never listened to one, I suppose it is time.
I have not looked at your blog in quite awhile, and laughed that this was the most recent post. I have always been a nerd, married a nerd, and now we are happily raising our little nerdlings. The nerds will inherit the earth and until then, it is a great life! We love TED talks as well and love the conversations that result from watching. Great Post!
