Never Was There A Tale Of More Woe...

than not that of Juliet and her Romeo, but of my kids and their 1-day pets Peach and Clementine.  Seriously.  It's really sad.  We promised the kids they could get a pet when we moved.  Promised.  And they wanted something cute and cuddly.  And we couldn't get a dog.  So, going against my repulsion caused by rodents, I caved and got them guiniea pigs.  Peach and Clementine.  And they were so excited.  And I was freaked out.  Rodents living in our house.  They smelled bad to me.  And they looked like rodents.  And I couldn't handle it.  I couldn't.  And I made Rob take them back.  It was horrible.  The kids were shattered, crushed, devastated, etc.  They were bawling.  Sobbing.  Grief stricken, one and all.   It was a parenting low, for sure.  But I now know that if there is one pet I can stomach, it's a dog.  I don't mind touching a dog.  I like dogs.  Fish are pointless.  Turtles are boring.  Even cats creep me out.  So someday....

Sorry kids.

That is sad. You know I had two guiniea pigs in California as a boy. Dogs weren't allowed on the Temple grounds and the mission home was on the temple grounds. They died by consuming poison pellets put out to kill snails. I transitioned into a parakeet, but I really wanted a dog all along. Never had one. I survived, however.

I believe Coaster gave your children a taste of the reality of a puppy. I think they want a full grown dog now.

That really is a tragedy. I hope they have recovered, they generally do. It will be a great story for one and all to laugh about later.

But they were so cute! And you don't have to take them out for a walk; and they don't eat much. Of course, they don't lick your face and wag their tails when you pet them either. So mixed bag. I never had the privilege of owning a guinea pig (although I've felt like one a few times).

Sad, but a funny story though. I just don't see you as a pet person. I don't see myself as one either, but I keep telling Grace that we'll get a dog when she turns 12. That used to be a lot further away....

I think I'm with you on this one. :)

Hahahaha!! I love this story. At least you took them back to the store and didn't release them at a nearby stream like my friend did with her guinea pigs.

ah, sad! but i can understand. pets are so much more cool when you're little - they mostly just gross me out/annoy me now. that's why we have fish. :)

maybe a bird?

So very sad. I wanted kittens so badly when I was little. And now I hate animals, generally. It's a problem.

You know what? We promised our kids the same thing when moving to Reno. And I felt the same as you...so we went to the pet store and I discovered what all small animals eat - either nuts or sunflower seeds. So, I told them either Beck or I could die - or they could get their pet. Their choice...

Luckily they chose for beck and myself to live...

But, I do feel a little guilty about my broken promise... But not guilty enough to get a dog and scoop his poop. :)
