Treasure Hunting

letterboxing. Anyone heard of it? I never had, but my sister posted about this on her blog and I think it looks like so much fun. You can do it all over the country and I think it would be such a fun Saturday family adventure. I guess the whole thing started in Dartmoor England and has been going strong in the USA since about 1998. You go to the letterboxing website, click on your state, find a clue for a letterbox hidden near you. Then using the clues you go find it. Inside the letterbox is a book and a stamp. You take a stamp and book with you. When you find the letterbox you stamp your book with the letterbox stamp and you stamp the letterbox book with your stamp. Anyway, you can make and hide your own letterbox. I think this sounds like so much fun. And since they are hidden all over the country you can go for a hunt anywhere! I think we will give this a try.

Yes!! We heard about this from one of my good friends here (in fact, I refer to her as "my Anna in Delaware") and we went out looking for a few letterboxes with them over the summer. It was really, really fun. A great mix of hiking and hunting for treasure. The kids really loved following the clues and finding the boxes at the end. I was amazed at the very creative and ornate stamps (often handcarved) that people had made to include in their box. We just had these little dopy 1x1" stamps that seemed so puny compared to what others were using. And I was amazed at how many boxes there were locally (we have a lot of state parks in the area, and most are hidden there). It made me want to go and put a box out myself because it would be fun to see how many stamps you can collect from othersw over time. I hope that you go and do it soon (well, maybe after the snow melts!) because I think that everyone would enjoy it.

Sounds fun. I was surprised to see so many letterboxes in Hawaii. If/when the keiki come out, we'll have to go looking!
