Anyone seen The Bad Seed? About the sweet little murdering girl, who is pictured above getting a spanking?
It seems that Clara is turning into a bit of a rotten stinker. Of course with three older siblings mauling her constantly with love and affection, I can see how she has needed to learn to be aggressive. Yesterday at the gym she had to get written up (an incident report) for hitting and pushing the younger babies! Emabarrassing. And when I say "are you going to be nice?" she grins diabolicaly and said, "no." I don't really think she knows what I meant, but still. Today I said, "We don't push. We don't hit. No. No. No." And she said, "Yes. Push babies." Seriously? The bad seed! How do you discipline a nearly two year old without it becoming some kind of game? Help!

Looks like you have your work cut out for you. At least she's super cute. Oh no. Good luck!
"Yes. Push babies." oh my word! that makes me laugh! Sorry :)
Well, I can empathize with you a bit right now... Elena is in, what I pray is only a phase, where she hits, bites, scratches, and pinches everyone. Especially if she is frustrated with them. Its really embarrassing and I'm not quite sure if anything we're doing is being effective. I wish I had some pointers for you, but I've never been through this before and am looking for some myself.
Good luck!
The trouble is -- precocious kids turn two early!
i laughed so hard at, "yes, push babies." HA! i have no advice to give, unfortunately. sometimes sophie smacks me across the face and i put her in her room for like, 30 seconds. don't know if it's really worked, but that's all i've got. let us know what you figure out!
It's lucky they are so cute or we would kill them.
Be firm. And you HAVE TO follow through, even if it means leaving something you would rather be doing.
I actually dragged you out of church to smack your hind end, if you will remember.
If you don't smack, then try the straight jacket (sitting with them immobilized on your lap with your folded arms restraining them).
They may not understand completely what they are doing, but as Bill said, she's bright and she knows what's going on.
D.
Yikes.
We had a problem with Cash when he was about Clara's age where he was hitting the kids at the gym too! I personally think he learned the tactic from the kids at the gym... 'cause with no other kids... there's not a lot of pushing and shoving go on at our house. I used the tactic of telling him how sad it made me when he hurt other kids. And I made my saddest face. I told him things like: "I don't like it. It makes me sad." That may be a bit manipulative... but it ended up working pretty well. I've also heard other people talk about a reward system... and if they were nice... then they get a treat when they get out. If not, no treat. Neither of these are probably the best parenting techniques... but when you're at your wits end... you gotta try something! Good Luck. If anything, know it is just a phase and she will eventually grow out of it. And hopefully not too many kids will go home with a black eye.
And ps...
Maybe she just needs to get a punch from one of the other gym kids to know that she doesn't like it. hee hee.
I have no idea what you should do, but I have come back to read this several times today, it makes me laugh everytime! Sorry for your dilemma, but thanks for making me smile!
I unfortunately have had a lot of experience with aggressive kids, dealing with a son on the autism spectrum.
Does she only do it at the gym? If so, maybe going to the gym in the middle of the afternoon when there are hardly any kids would work if it worked for you schedule. My kids always do better when there isn't such a crowd.
But if she does it at home too, then you have some control cause you are at home. You can pick her up and put her in her room and lovingly tell her she can come out when you don't have to worry about her hitting/pushing or when she is sweet again. This worked for me when my girl would pinch and my son would scratch. (if she is having a hard time staying in her room when you tell her, there are lots of good ways to make that work if you are interested). You have total control over where her body is (because you can pick her up) and it works to let them be around other kids when she is sweet but not be around them when she is not sweet. (Love and Logic technique I love!!! for toddlers).
I think also hand-over-hand showing her how to be soft (like with a doll or sister) could help.
I maintain, a future D-winger for sure!
